Visiting Út in Windsor
Út's two sisters, Lychị and Lyem, were also staying at the same house waiting for us to come visit.
Út's mother-in-law and her niece also came to visit, the two of them flew in from two places. Miss Claudette flew in from France, Út's mother-in-law flew in from Senegal. Út's mother-in-law had to fly from Dakar to France, then the two aunt and niece would fly on the same flight from Charles De Gaulle Airport to Detroit Airport. But there were paperwork problems and plane delays in Senegal, so Út's mother-in-law arrived late in France. So her niece in France, Claudette, flew straight from Charles De Gaulle Airport to Detroit Airport without any problems. The two of them flew in two different flights from France to Detroit. But they had already arrived at their desired destination, so they were still happy and satisfied.
Út's mother-in-law is 92 years old this year, still healthy, alert, and intelligent. Very alert, especially intelligent. A normal long flight is also 17 hours from Senegal and France to the United States. But she encountered long procedures for entry and transit at the airport, so it took her 9 hours to arrive late. But she was still cheerful when she met her son Hùng and grandchild at the airport. The mother is truly extraordinary beyond words. I admire her immensely. She said:
- In my life, I had encountered so many miserable and troublesome things, what is the point of this trouble at the airport? That's nothing.
She told the story of how she "scolds" the airport staff in a string of French. We only understood one word equivalent to English, but we laughed happily listening to her loud voice and her firm "unprofessional" voice.....I forgot to record and listen to the whole long sentence again. But her way of speaking was very formal and literary.
We loved her so we all called her Grandma Khoai or mama. She also happily accepted us, a group of "strange children and grandchildren", as her own children and grandchildren. We ate together, sat in the sun, and talked about all kinds of things from morning to noon to evening.
Listening to her tell stories from the past to the present. We learned many life lessons from mama.
Hope mama is healthy and has a great summer vacation in Windsor.

Hai chị của em Út, Lychị và Lyem cũng ở cùng nhà chờ đón chúng tôi tới chơi.
Má chồng em Út và cô cháu của bà cũng tới chơi, 2 người bay từ 2 nơi tới. Cô Claudette bay tới từ nước Pháp, Má chồng em Út bay tới từ Senegal. Má chồng em Út phải bay từ Dakar tới Pháp rồi 2 dì và cháu sẽ bay cùng chuyến bay từ phi trường Charles De Gaulle tới phi trường Detroit. Nhưng trục trặc giấy tờ và trể nãi máy bay ở Senegal nên bà má chồng em Út tới Pháp trể. Cho nên cô cháu của bà ở Pháp là Claudette bay thẳng từ phi trường Charles De Gaulle tới Phi trường Detroit cái vù không có gì rắc rối. Vậy là 2 người đã bay 2 chuyến bay khác nhau từ Pháp tới Detroit. Nhưng đã đi tới nơi mong muốn cho nên vẫn là toại nguyện vui vẻ.
Bà má chồng năm nay 92 tuổi, vẫn còn khoẻ mạnh minh mẫn thông tuệ. Rất minh mẫn đặc biệt. Một chuyến bay dài thông thường cũng 17 giờ từ Senegal và Pháp tới nước Mỹ. Nhưng mà bà gặp thủ tục dài dòng nhập cảnh, quá cảnh ở phi trường cho nên cũng mất 9 tiếng tới trể. Nhưng vẫn tươi rói khi gặp các con cháu ở phi trường. Bà mẹ thật phi thường hết chỗ nói luôn. Thán phục vô cùng. Bà nói:
- Suốt đời má gặp quá nhiều chuyện khốn khổ rắc rối trăm bề, chuyện rắc rối ở phi trường này có nghiã lý gì đâu. Bà kể chuyện bà "mắng mỏ" các nhân viên phi trường bằng một tràng tiếng Pháp. Chúng tôi chỉ hiểu một chữ tương đương tiếng Anh mà chúng tôi cười vui vẻ nghe bà to tiếng và giọng nói chắc nịch "unprofessional".....tôi quên thu thanh rồi nghe lại cả câu nói dài. Nhưng cách nói của bà rất formal và văn chương.
Chúng tôi yêu quý bà nên đều gọi bà là Bà nội bé Khoai hay là mama. Bà cũng vui vẻ chấp nhận chúng tôi một đám "con cháu xa lạ" xem như là con cháu của bà. Cùng ăn cùng ngồi phơi nắng nói đủ thứ chuyện sáng trưa chiều tối.
Nghe bà kể chuyện xưa cho tới nay. Chúng tôi học nhiều bài học trường đời từ mama.
Mong mama khoẻ mạnh và có kỳ nghĩ hè ở Windsor vui vẻ.
